The AI Ad Trust Gap: How Brands Can Use AI Without Losing Customers

Generative AI has made producing an ad cheaper than ever: copy, images and even video can be created in minutes. But as costs fall, another problem is surfacing: consumers can tell, and they do not necessarily like it. AI-generated ads are spreading fast, and the real question for brands is no longer whether to use AI, but how to use it without trading away the trust they have worked hard to build.
AI-generated ads are everywhere, but consumers are not sold

A survey by Bentley University and Gallup, published in August 2026 and based on 3,270 U.S. adults, gives a blunt answer:
- 79% say they have seen ads in the past 30 days that looked like they were made with AI.
- 49% view businesses' use of AI in advertising negatively, while only 19% view it positively and 32% are neutral.
- Young adults are the most skeptical: 66% of 18- to 29-year-olds hold a negative view, the highest of any age group.
These numbers deserve a pause. AI ads are now common enough that consumers can spot them easily, and "obviously AI" can itself become a negative signal.
What marketers believe versus what consumers feel

The perception gap is even more concerning. Research published by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) in January 2026 found that:
- 82% of ad executives believe Gen Z and Millennial consumers feel positively about AI-generated ads, but only 45% of those consumers actually do. The 37-point gap has widened from 32 points in 2024.
- 39% of Gen Z report negative feelings toward AI ads, nearly double the share of Millennials (20%).
- Advertisers' top reason for using AI has shifted from creative innovation to cost efficiency (64%).
In other words, the industry is racing toward savings while consumers are retreating on trust. Brands that only read internal efficiency reports can easily misjudge how the market really reacts.
Where consumers draw the line: AI as an assistant, not a stand-in

The good news is that consumers are not rejecting AI outright. The Gallup survey draws a clear line:
- 75% accept AI helping employees brainstorm or draft ads, as long as it is disclosed.
- 53% accept AI creating the final text, images or video.
- But 62% say it is unacceptable to use AI to create synthetic people or voices in ads.
IAB found something similar: 73% of Gen Z and Millennials say knowing an ad used AI would either increase or not hurt their likelihood to buy. Yet while 89% of advertisers disclose AI use at least sometimes, fewer than half do so consistently.
The conclusion is clear: consumers care less about the tool and more about authenticity. Using AI to speed up creative work is acceptable; using it to replace real faces and voices without saying so erodes trust.
Four principles for using AI-generated ads

Based on this data, we recommend four principles for deciding AI's role in your advertising:
- Use it heavily behind the scenes, carefully in front. Hand ideation, scripts, variant testing and format resizing to AI; keep real people and real photography for the hero visuals and spokespeople customers actually see.
- No undisclosed stand-ins. If you must use synthetic people or voices, label them clearly and never let them pass as genuine human endorsements.
- Disclose consistently. Rather than labeling occasionally, set a fixed disclosure rule in your brand guidelines so every ad follows the same standard.
- Guard quality with brand guidelines. The faster AI produces, the more you need clear visual and tone rules to avoid the instantly recognizable "AI look".
In TitApeX terms, it is a clear division of labor between people and machines:
- AI handles volume, speed, format adaptation and data-driven testing.
- People handle brand perspective, real stories, real faces, and the final judgment that says "this feels like us".

Conclusion

AI-generated ads are not going away; there will only be more of them. That is exactly why brands that make consumers feel something real and considered will stand out. AI makes it perfect, people make it moving. It is not a slogan but the most practical competitive strategy in an era when trust is increasingly scarce.
